| Columnist Randy Beard: In Sampson situation, there's no gray area
Kelvin Sampson's defensive principles stink. Accused by the NCAA on Wednesday afternoon of being both a liar and a cheater, Indiana University's basketball coach responded hours later — and after being further staggered by a 68-66 home loss to Wisconsin — by saying that he hasn't "knowingly" misled anyone. .

Ghana 2008: Nations Cup diary
Number two, where have all the bolts gone? Ibrahim reckons the mechanics who changed all the tires a few days ago mustn't have screwed them on properly - so he heads off over the crest of the hill on a bolt hunt. An hour later he reappears with two of the six bolts and we decide to borrow three bolts from the other wheels. Problem number three turns out to be jack related - it doesn't work and only lifts the axle a few inches. Ibrahim's ingenious idea is to stop a passing vehicle to borrow a cutlass and dig a hole beneath the axle to fit the wheel. After two hours we're miraculously on the move again and make it to Kintampo - see its beautiful waterfall before pushing on to Tamale before nightfall and armed robbers cause us problems. .

However yet another dimension to this needs to be explored. How much of the $40million lease money really trickles down to grassroot Fijians needs to be assessed. And I do mean 'trickle' doen to orfinary Fijians given that the hierarchy 'sponges' up most of this sum.

Many fans, tiny dog, lots of awe greet racing bicyclists
Fans lined the streets. They walked with dogs. They pushed baby strollers. They huddled under umbrellas. They rode into town on rusty old rigs and $6,000 carbon fiber racing machines, in jeans and in Lycra, all to watch Stage 2 of the Tour of California. * * * .
Can Cutcliffe Turn It Around?
Here's a fact that I imagine would bring a certain amount of chagrin to State and Carolina football fans: Despite Duke's ineptness in the sport over the last 40-plus years, the Blue Devils still have won outright or shared more ACC football championships than both the Wolfpack and the Tar Heels. And Duke, with its 1989, co-championship even has a more recent title than either State or Carolina. Yes, at one time, way back in the ‘50s and ‘60s, when Bill Murray roamed the sidelines, Duke actually played football pretty well. That certainly hasn't been the case recently, but with the hiring of Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe, Duke administrators are saying the right things about trying to make Blue Devil football at least competitive. "It wasn't about just making a change of one person or a personnel change." So says Duke president Richard Brodhead.
