Track World Cup 04/05 Round 3 - CDM

Olympic pursuit champion Bradley Wiggins, a new OBE, is aiming for success in the endurance events. He faces his toughest test in the points race, where Russias Olympic gold medallist and current World Cup leader Mikhael Ignatiev will be the man to beat. Athens medallist Rob Hayles is also targeting the individual pursuit, and a clash with his old rival Sergi Escobar of Spain, who narrowly defeated Hayles in last years World Championship final, is on the cards.

The womens events include the points race where the top three in the World Cup standings, Lyudmyla Vypyraylo (Ukraine), Erin Mirabella (USA) and Alexis Rhodes (Australia) are chasing the overall title. Also competing will be Nicole Cooke (Great Britain) and Katherine Bates (Australia). Bates, who like Cooke is a Commonwealth champion, hit top form in last Easters World Cup at Manchester, scoring a pursuit and points race double.

The Ministry for the Environment (MfE) has developed proposals for a first step towards national guidelines for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Until now there have been no national standards for managing WEEE, despite some electronic parts in computers, mobile phones, and other equipment containing dangerous compounds.

At the centre of the guidelines is the principle that all members of the recycling chain have a “duty of care” to ensure than the disposable of electronic or electric products do not have a negative effect on the environment.

Submissions close on 23 November 2007. You can view the proposed guidelines at: http://www.mfe.govt.nz/publications/waste/weee-good-practice-guidelines-sep07/weee-good-practice-guidelines-sep07.pdf. An online submission form is at: http://www.mfe.govt.nz/issues/waste/special/e-waste/good-practice-guidelines.html#submission

PROXY Governance, Inc. Recommends That Gyrodyne Shareholders Vote for ...

ST. JAMES, N.Y., November 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gyrodyne Company of America, Inc. (NASDAQ: GYRO) announced today that independent proxy advisory firm PROXY Governance, Inc., a leading independent proxy advisory firm, has recommended that Gyrodyne shareholders vote the WHITE proxy card and FOR the Company's nominees for election to the Board of Directors at the upcoming Annual Shareholders Meeting and not vote for the slate of candidates put forth by Phillip Goldstein and his Bulldog hedge funds. PROXY Governance also recommended that Gyrodyne shareholders NOT vote for Bulldog's proposal to terminate Gyrodyne's shareholder rights plan. This follows Monday's announcement that Glass, Lewis & Co., another leading independent proxy advisory firm, had also recommended that shareholders vote FOR the Company's nominees and NOT vote for Bulldog's nominees or proposal.

Net Neutrality Is a Civil Rights Issue

Metered pricing plans which do not recognize differences in peak versus off-peak use are instead designed to undermine net neutral internet use by opening the door to "fast lane" and "everything" high-priced packages along the lines of cable tv forced packaging and bundling plans.

Preventing blocking of competitor content is only part of a serious violation of net neutrality. Congestion caused by oversold capacity is the rest of the problem and requires net neutral solutions as well.

NARPO: Detaining terrorist suspects

Are we to wait until that time arrives and potentially guilty suspects are released before Parliament listens to the considered advice of the police service? NARPO supports allowing questioning after charge but does not see this as an alternative to extending the time limits on detention. Police need sufficient evidence to satisfy the Crown Prosecution Service that a ‘Prima Facia' case exists against a detained suspect before a charge can be put. As we have explained, this can take time. We are sure that the police should put charges at the earliest reasonable time. Allowing questioning after charge should encourage that position and be a further safeguard to detained suspects. NARPO supports the use of intercepted communications evidence in criminal court proceedings. Whilst acknowledging that an ‘intelligence only' strategy has its attractions, we believe that most members of the public will not understand that if significant intercept evidence exists, why that evidence cannot be put before a court.

O.J. Simpson's Girlfriend Hospitalized With 'Severe Head Injury'

Simpson's girlfriend Christie Prody was hospitalized in Miami Monday for what police are calling a "severe head injury," "Entertainment Tonight" reported.

Prody suffered bruises and head injuries -- but it was because of a fall, and it had nothing to do with Simpson, Miami police told TMZ.com.

The National Enquirer reported that Simpson was being investigated after Prody was taken to the hospital. But cops told TMZ that her injuries are "consistent" with a fall she took at a gas station, that they don't consider this a criminal case and that Simpson was never a suspect.

An anonymous caller reported a woman falling and was taken by Fire Rescue to Baptist Hospital of Miami with a severe head injury, according to a police report obtained by "Entertainment Tonight."

Prody had been "intoxicated and always falling down" during a trip this month to San Antonio, a witness told police, according to the report.

His war secret out, Prince Harry redeployed

It is, for those there, a life-or-death situation. You can not fuss around over a particular individual, even if he is royalty. Everyone has to be 'one of the boys,' subject to the chain of command. Otherwise, it does not work, and your friends die.

Do you think it might be 'fun' to stand there and invite others to shoot at you? Do you think Harry was merely playing games? I don't. I am a pacifist by nature, but I think you, and others here, insult by your comments all soldiers who are doing the work and doing what they think is right, at great risk.

Regardless of what one thinks of Canada's role in Afghanistan (and I have my own strong views about that), regardless of what one might think about the public relations value to the royal family and support for a war from this incident, one has to admit that Harry was there, serving with the army on the front lines.

Ups and Downs

Henry Lowe (Nate Parker), articulate, talented and hot-headed; Hamilton Burgess (Jermaine Williams), a play-it-safe type, and Samantha Booke (Jurnee Smollett), an aspiring lawyer and firebrand. As the social ills of the era swirl around them, the Wiley debate team forges an undefeated season. The final showdown with Harvard provides all the underdog vs. top-dog dynamics you'd expect. While Washington and Forest Whitaker add their Oscar-winning heft to the proceedings, the film belongs to the team members, in particular the wonderful Jurnee Smollett, who had proven her acting chops at age 11 with her brilliant performance in Eve's Bayou. She embodies the strength of will and passion needed to succeed as an ambitious black woman in the 1930s. The Great Debaters smooths out the edges too much to be a great film, but it is a good one.
