Millions of subscribers are likely to drop their paid accounts. Currently subscriptions still account for about 80% of AOL's revenue, contributing to 19% of Time Warner's revenue last year. But after peaking at 26.7 million U.S. subscribers in September 2002, AOL's subscription base dropped 30% to 18.6 million in March this year. Back to top Liberty and private equity face-off, again Liberty Global and the private equity firms Warburg Pincus and Cinven are battling it out to win the E3bn auction for Essent Kabelcom, the Netherlands second largest cable operator. Liberty had apparently been given preferred bidder status, but Warburg Pincus and Cinven are still vying to jointly take control. A couple of weeks ago Warburg Pincus and Cinven jointly acquired Casema, the Netherlands third largest cable group, for E4.1bn including debt.
Three matchmakers try to help, but Mr. Wrong leads her to Mr. Wow
Lisa Ronis is sitting in a coffee shop with her French hound, Stella, leaving a sparkling message: "I've found the man for you. His name is John. He's hilarious, sexy, and I've given him your number. Let's chat!" For most people this would be a social call, but Ronis is hard at work. She is a professional matchmaker, a member of a booming nationwide industry. There are more than 1,000 private matchmakers in the United States today, according to Marketdata Enterprises, a research group in Florida. And there's even a school to train them: The Matchmaking Institute in New York City molds novice meddlers into professional love brokers. "It's all about efficiency," says Rachel Greenwald, a professional matchmaker in Colorado. "If, say, you're a busy executive, a third-party setup saves you the time it takes to slog through all the dating arenas — spending hours at a crowded party only to go home having met no one." Since it's one thing to hear about the wonders of matchmaking from those who sell the service and quite another to experience it yourself, I decided to test the viability of this venerable institution by asking three matchmakers to work their magic on me.
Family thrilled by recovery of killer virus victim
Encephalitis is a complicated condition and it is impossible to predict an individual patient's chances."Now there are moments of clarity, it's like his brain is unclouding," McKenzie said. "He used to play the guitar and now if you ask him to play a G he will try and make the shape with his fingers. He does look like a very disabled person, but we are confident he will make a fair bit of progress. It is slow but it is good for us."I took my two-year-old daughter Drew to see him and I stood her on the bed and he said her name. He was trying to put his hands up to his face and play peek-a-boo. That's what he use .
Clinton blasts Obama on financing
Obama's campaign says its commitment is to sit down with the GOP nominee and “talk this through," Obama strategist David Axelrod said Sunday on CBS' “Face the Nation."“We're not backing away," Axelrod said.At a news conference Friday in Milwaukee, Obama said: “I think it would be presumptuous of me to start saying now that I'm locking myself into something when I don't even know if the other side is going to agree to it, and I'm not the nominee yet."If he wins the nomination, Obama said, “I assure you that my folks and John McCain's folks will sit down and see if we can arrive at a common set of ground rules."McCain says he will commit to taking public funds if the Democratic nominee does so.Clinton has not made a commitment about taking public funds for the fall if she were to be the nominee.“If I'm the nominee, I will look at it," Clinton said in the Sunday interview, but, she said, unlike Obama, “I have made no promises."Clinton said the controversy “is more about (Obama's) credibility than about the issue" itself. In an interview Friday, Democratic Sen.
Harkleroad gets back on radar screen
Five years ago, Ashley Harkleroad captured Charleston as few tennis players have. Little known, and just 17 years old at the time, Harkleroad was the belle of the Family Circle Cup until the Saturday semifinals. She was perky, pretty and a delight to watch. But for most of the time since then, the girl affectionately known as Pebbles from her days of living in little Flintstone, Ga., has been in a different zone. Then a couple of weeks ago, newspapers around the world flashed photos of Harkleroad. The 5-5 blonde practically carried the U.S. Fed Cup team on her back against Germany, while Lindsay Davenport's highly acclaimed comeback faltered. Davenport fell to 129th-ranked Sabine Lisicki the first day, but Harkleroad won both of her singles matches in the competition in straight sets to spearhead the win over Germany.
Why Is Huckabee Doing So Well?
I am not redefining anything. I am pro-life. Just stating the logic of the word. Keeping abortion legal means the pro-choice person does not wish the government involved, and thereby is using a conservative principle to dictate the pro-choice policy ( much like I am against smoking, but do not want government outlaw tobacco ). However, a person who advocates for government funding, or to undermine parental rights, or tells the mother that its no big deal, its just a Fetus, is pro-abortion. Most average pro-choice people want abortion to be legal and rare...its the often and darn a woman for chosing to keep the baby that are pro-abortion. Fact is Mitt was pro-choice, is now pro-life...and he was never pro-abortion. .
Georgia Police Question Witnesses in Killing of Two Officers
He said investigators know there are witnesses to the killings and "we want them to come forward." The chief held up photographs of Bryant, a two-year veteran of the department, and Barker, who worked there for four years. Both are married with four children, he said. "Bottom line: We lost two police officers for nothing," the chief said at the Wednesday afternoon press conference. "They clearly didn't have the advantage, or we wouldn't be here. Obviously something terrible happened." Earlier Wednesday, Bolton had a message for the gunmen: "If I were you, I'd turn myself in. The sun's coming up. Before sundown, we're gonna find you." But as the day wore on, Williams said she didn't know when the murder suspects would be caught. "I can't judge when we're going to make an arrest," she told FOXNews.com.
Cougs struggle past Beavs
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Behind the wry smile, beneath the tan complexion, Tony Bennett's blood still simmered in a back hallway at Gill Coliseum on Thursday night. Yes, the 21st-ranked Washington State Cougars accomplished their ultimate mission – a 70-57 victory over Oregon State, sending the lowly Beavers to a school-record 14th consecutive defeat. But the Cougars' play lacked sharpness, and their effort was void of spirit – two things the second-year coach won't tolerate. Runs at crucial times, marked by the shooting of guards Taylor Rochestie (career-high 24 points) and Derrick Low (21 points) and the inside energy of Robbie Cowgill (nine points, 11 rebounds), carried the Cougars through this one. "We got ourselves together, and came up with stingy defense at times, and made some plays," Bennett said.
Checking out the great whites in Loire Valley
Henri Bourgeois 2006 Petit Bourgeois; $11. This is a clean, baseline, everyday sauvignon that brings with it the sharp, grassy flavors of the Loire. You won't find the crystalline layers of mineral, nor the deluxe racy acids of the higher-priced wines, but there is no sugar, no cheap oak and nothing interfering with the honest flavors of the grape. Grab some oysters and go! (Distributed by Grape Expectations) .
