Dating Russian Women

Muscovites count the cost of Valentine's Day

It was there I met Katya Kuznetsova, a beautiful and confident advertising executive with a weakness for strawberry ice cream, although you would hardly know it from her slim figure.

Katya, who's 22, is dating Sasha, a drummer in a heavy metal band. This will be their second Valentine's Day together.

Last year he took her to see a romantic foreign film, which was rather more her cup of tea than his.

She also likes watching the TV comedy series "Sex & The City" about the seductive antics of some very liberated New York women.

There's a Russian equivalent, in which Katya says the characters want more than hot dates and casual sex. They're looking for marriage.

It's a silly programme, she says, but in a way very Russian.

Speaking of her parents' courtship back in the days of the USSR, Katya says: "They took everything very seriously back then.

In Africa, she explores a different side of herself

But cultural differences have caused friction over her choice of career.

Like many young Americans with an array of educational options, Umoh's goal - to be a performer on the New York stage - has largely been guided by her heart. But her father, who runs a home health care agency near Dallas, had something more practical in mind - he selected medicine - and his displeasure has sometimes irked her.

He says that he is proud of her. "When she graduates," he said in an interview, "I'll have a party, not just for me but the entire Nigerian community." Still, he's contributed little to her college expenses, which she's paying for through loans and jobs; and he matter-of-factly acknowledges he's never seen her perform in Boston, or even heard her sing, except for one high school musical.

Roses & Raspberries

Your love, kindness and support will never be forgotten. - Carol Cheeseman and Janet Parr

To Janette at Swonk's Flower Shop, who made the beautiful decoration for my family monument at Memorial Park. Dec. 24, when I discovered it had been stolen, busy as she was, she made a replacement. Thank you. - Elaine Rickard, Battle Creek

A big bouquet to the Galesburg firefighters, the ambulance workers, the UPS man and Jim, Bobby, Todd and Billy who all had a hand in saving Simmie Hicks Sr.'s life on Dec. 17. He was at Jim Woodin's shop at Galesburg when he went into cardiac arrest. There are not words to express our thanks to each and every one of you. Thanks to you, we had a wonderful Christmas. Thanks also to the ER at Borgess and all the wonderful doctors and nurses for the good care Simmie got.

Mantle Still Hits Cleanup

During a memorable career and despite numerous injuries, Mantle won seven World Series rings, batted .298, hit 536 home runs, and waltzed into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Unlike the obsessively private Joe DiMaggio or the reticent Roger Maris, the hard-living, hard-drinking Mantle wore his flaws on his sleeve. He remains a hot commodity: A recent check showed 316 Mantle items for sale on eBay, ranging from a copy of a baseball card for one cent to a little statue of the Mick hitting a home run for $550, to a Mantle silk-screen valued at $2,500, to an autographed jersey valued at $7,500.

It's hard to tell how much money is at stake in the lawsuit, but the Mantles often try to defend their rights to the Mick's image. In 1997, the estate won a settlement in California federal court against Upper Deck, a baseball-card company, for royalties in connection with the use of the Mantle name.

12 die in Guyana shooting

The attack came just three weeks after gunmen attacked the coastal village of Lusignan, killing six adults and five children.

Alleged gang leader Rondell Rawlins - the country's most-wanted man, who is implicated in the 2006 assassination of Agriculture Minister Satyadeo Sawh - has claimed responsibility for the Jan. 26 killings. He had threatened more deadly assaults if his pregnant girlfriend, missing since around Jan. 18, is not returned.

Authorities issued an arrest warrant last week for a suspected underworld figure they believe kidnapped her.

President Bharrat Jagdeo's administration has called Rawlins' gang domestic terrorists intent on creating mayhem in this English-speaking South American nation of 730,000.

Security forces have offered a $250,000 reward for information leading to Rawlins' capture.

Corrections and clarifications

M&I also said it could write off up to $195 million in bad debt in the quarter, compared with $15 million a year earlier.

An item Saturday in the Religion Briefing misstated the address of St. Francis Chapel at the motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Francis Assisi, where Bishop William Callahan will preside at a liturgy at 9 a.m. Jan. 6. It is at 3221 S. Lake Drive, not 1501 S. Layton Blvd. The Milwaukee Archdiocese provided incorrect information.

An item in the Regional News Watch on Nov. 3 transposed the names of a man charged with reckless homicide and the victim. It was William G. Stone, not Marvin G. Wise, who faced fines and prison terms after being charged. Wise was the victim.

An editorial Thursday on recent incidents involving air traffic controllers at the Federal Aviation Administration's Chicago Center in Aurora, Ill., left the impression that a commercial airliner and a private plane came within 300 feet of one another on Dec.

The Debriefing: Lynchings Aren't Really a Great Source of Comedy

At some point over the next few days, someone might ask me what the Jaguars have to do to beat the Patriots on Saturday night. And my response might be that they should kidnap Tom Brady, chain him to a pipe in a dark crawlspace somewhere, and have Tony Boselli beat him with a bag of Canadian quarters until the game is over. Now, I don't really want that to happen to Tom Brady (at the very least, the quarters are unnecessary). You know that. People joke like this ... they suggest that the best or only way to overcome a superior talent is if that superior talent is unable to actually compete, and they often suggest an odd or humorous way for that talent to become incapacitated.I joke like this. Friends of mine joke like this. You might joke like this. And The Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman tried to joke like this ...

The site has had many uses; it was a field in medieval times, workers cottages in the 18th century and finally became a school in Victorian times.

Archaeologists are calling on local residents, families or anybody keen to get their hands dirty, to come down to the open weekend and have a go at digging deep to try and uncover relics from the past. The digging experts will also be on hand to give guided tours of the site and talk about local history.

Those wishing to take part in the dig should book places through the Museum of London box office on 0870 444 3850. The event is free and takes place between 10am and 4pm each day.
