| Ferrell dribbles away another sports comedy
Moon became a one-hit wonder with his song, "Love Me Sexy," and used his money to buy a loser American Basketball Association team, the Flint (Mich.) Tropics. Apparently, it's not enough that he owns the team: He also plays and coaches. When the league prepares to merge with the NBA, the Tropics learn they will cease to exist unless they can finish in the ABA's top four. Thus begins the challenge of trying to win basketball games and attract more fans. To accomplish this, they bring in star player Monix (Woody Harrelson, who convincingly plays the long-haired, washed-up basketball star). He hurts Moon's feelings by persuading team members that they need to focus on basketball fundamentals rather than pre-show shenanigans. Moon, meanwhile, dreams up funny marketing ploys to lure more fans, such as wrestling a live bear and offering free corn dogs if the team scores a certain number of points (leading the crowd to cheer "Corn DOG! Corn DOG!").

Salmond: 'I'll quit if Budget falls'
If there is no agreement on a replacement First Minister after 28 days, an election is called automatically. The spokesman did not rule out the possibility of the First Minister and his Cabinet resigning at 5:05pm if the Budget is rejected by parliament. But he stressed ministers remained "confident" that it would be approved. The spokesman also hinted that Mr Swinney would be unveiling extra concessions this afternoon. He added: "If he has anything to announce, he will announce it in his speech to parliament." The speech is expected to include a review of the resources used to tackle drug addiction and more emphasis on rehabilitation. An accelerated programme of reduced business rates and a shift in the public-transport budget are also likely, as is more money for health in Edinburgh.Mr Swinney has already given considerable ground on police numbers, promising to find an extra £10 million from the prisons, roads and health budgets to recruit an extra 300 officers next year. This was intended to be enough to buy the support of the Tories, but the Conservatives want more for the fight against drugs and on business rates.Mr Swinney has also already conceded ground to the Greens, promising more than £4 million extra for community anti- climate change projects. However, the Greens also believe Mr Swinney needs to go further to secure their abstentions.
Children's Theatre fans ask council, 'Why?!'
Theater for children is very, very popular in the bay area. Most other rep companies charge one hundred dollars or so for participating in a play, with scholarships available for those who cannot afford it. Perhaps this would reduce the bias and nepotism present in the current casting process, as well as reduce the load on Palo Alto taxpayers. As one of the most popular groups to emerge in the post-grunge alternative rock aftermath, Weezer received equal amounts of criticism and praise for their hook-heavy guitar pop. Drawing from the heavy power pop of arena rockers like Cheap Trick and the angular guitar leads of the Pixies, Weezer leavened their melodies with doses of '70s metal learned from bands like Kiss. But what set the band apart was their geekiness. None of the members of Weezer, especially leader Rivers Cuomo, were conventional rockers -- they were kids that holed up in their garage, playing along with their favorite records when they weren't studying or watching TV. As a result, their music was infused with a quirky sense of humor and an endearing awkwardness that made songs like "Undone (The Sweater Song)," "Buddy Holly," and "Say It Ain't So" into big modern rock hits during 1994 and 1995.

Among the things found in the Odyssey was a purse, a compact mirror, a comb, a cell phone charger and a flip-style cell phone in the open position and with its battery detached, Christensen testified. He said search dogs were directed to some of those items in hopes that they could detect her scent and eventually find her. There were groceries in the minivan and Christensen said he noticed the smell of "groceries going bad." On Sept. 3, store surveillance cameras captured Nina Reiser and her two kids going shopping at the Berkeley Bowl. Police say she then dropped off the children at her estranged husband's home on Exeter Drive in the Oakland hills and disappeared. Christensen said he also helped process Hans Reiser's home on Sept. 13 and Sept. 14. While the crime-lab collected evidence, Christensen said he and a technician trainee took photographs at the home; those photos were shown to the jury today.
Celtics make statement with defense against Cavs
When the new-look Cavaliers visited the Celtics Wednesday night, the stage was set for one of those statement games. Plenty of statements were made, too, for both teams. The Celtics' defense makes the difference. The Celtics' lead over the Pistons was down to two before Wednesday's game and they have been losing ground to Detroit in the defensive rankings. The Pistons have taken over No. 1 in points allowed but the Celtics remain the leader in field-goal percentage allowed. They were in fine form Wednesday, limiting the Cavaliers to 38.3 percent shooting in the 92-87 victory. The key was holding down the Cavaliers' big guns, LeBron James (7 for 24) and sixth man Wally Szczerbiak (3 for 13). Don't call Ben Wallace over the hill yet. He's telling reporters that the system in Chicago didn't fit his strengths, and playing power forward for the Cavaliers will allow him to do a little more roaming and helping teammates on defense.
