Suffolk Dept. of Social Services owes LIPA $1.3M
Suffolk's Department of Social Services has run up $1.3 million in unpaid utility bills with Long Island Power Authority for power supplied to public assistance clients, with some of the arrears dating back as much as six months. Both LIPA and department officials emphasize that none of the 2,000 recipients - whose bills are paid directly by the county agency - are in danger of being cut off from service. LIPA's top collection official, Arthur Abate, and Thomas DeJesu, LIPA's vice president of intergovernmental relations, will meet with Commissioner Janet DeMarzo next week over the delinquencies. "From time to time, there have been arrears, which are dealt with at the midmanagement level, but this time we thought it prudent to reach out to the commissioner," said Edward Dumas, LIPA's vice president of communications and formerly County Executive Steve Levy's spokesman.
Jack Nicholson warned Heath Ledger before mysterious death
HOLLYWOOD legend Jack Nicholson said he "warned" Heath Ledger before his death - as it emerged the cause of death will not be known for another 10 days. Nicholson and Ledger shared a bizarre connection - both played the Joker in Batman films and both had been taking a controversial anti-anxiety medication. The movie legend was dining at the Wolseley restaurant in London last night when a photographer told him about Heath’s passing. Jack, in Britain to promote new movie The Bucket List, replied "I warned him" then later said "I told him so". Asked about Ledger's death, Nicholson said: "Wasn't that horrible." The actor, who was wearing sunglasses at last night's premiere, said: "I took Ambien once. I fell asleep and then got a call and almost drove off a cliff 50 yards from my house.'' Reports have suggested that Ledger may have found playing the Joker role in the new Batman movie too much, and that the part left him unable to sleep and taking the medication Ambien.

James notches his 100th victory for Penn State tennis
(UWIRE) UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Michael James is as humble as they come. Not even 100 career victories can change his mentality. "I mean, yeah, it's nice," James said of the milestone, which he reached Saturday during the Penn State men's tennis team's 6-1 win over Cornell. "I don't dwell on it too much. I'm just trying to get this team in the right direction." And maybe he helped do just that. The victory at the Reis Tennis Center was the Nittany Lions' first on the road, as it moved them over .500 at 3-2. "It was important," James said. "We needed to bounce back after the tough loss last week." The Lions did just that, as they swept the doubles matches and won five of six singles matches. However, none were as significant as James'.
ALL POLITICS IS LOCAL
But just as you need skills to drive a car, you need skills to participate in a democracy. It's wonderful that people have the right to vote, but we have to create a system that allows them to develop the skills to see why they're voting, who they're voting for and why they prefer that candidate's positions. On this issue, we here in Egypt still have lots of hard work to do. So how do you do it? How do you create a culture of civic rights and responsibilities? Education. We have to start early in the schools. We have to make people realize that they're not just beneficiaries of services, they're partners in their communities. You have a problem with the water in your community? Fine. Don't just scream, ‘We have no water!' No, be a leader. Get your friends and neighbors together and form a delegation to go to the authorities to present your problem and ask whether there's anything you can do to help make it better.

La Nina and severe weather in the Ohio Valley...there seems to be a bond between the two entities. Much like the bond between Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, or Daryl Hall and John Oates, or maybe even Ed McMahon and Johnny Carson. You get the idea. Just for review, La Nina is the abnormal cooling of the tropical Pacific waters that usually spells warm and wet weather for the Blue Grass state. But when that warm, moist air clashes with colder, drier air to the north, stronger-than-normal storm systems for mid-winter standards tend to be the result. The past tells us a La Nina pattern can be a recipe for trouble in this part of the world. Sure enough, history repeated itself on February 5th. The "Super Tuesday Outbreak" was one for the ages! Now I won't rehash all the stats about that deadly night in this post (our links about that are on the weather page just below the forecast discussion), but I want to discuss how similar our current pattern is to another La Nina season: 1973-1974.
Hip-Hop Rumors: Jay-Z As Frank Lucas? Rockers Got Jokes? Can't Ban The ...
I can say that according to rumor, the ban on Jeezy has been lifted. I think that some facts came out and some things were cleared up. Either way, Jeezy and Jamz worked it out. That's cool. You can't ban the Snow mMan. I will try to get the real deal asap. JAY-Z AS FRANK LUCAS? They actually look a lot alike. I used the old classic gangster pic of Jay for affect. So let me get this. Jay-Z wanted to play Frank Lucas in American Gangster, according to a source for Sandra Rose. Jay-Z gets turned down for role after Denzel enters the picture. Jay then offers to do the soundtrack, which was also denied. Jay-Z then does a concept album anyway to do what he wanted to regardless.
